Our growing practices

PERMACULTURE:

Our organic, no-till method of agriculture is a farming system that works harmoniously with nature. We replenish the soil with organic matter, layering it compost and wood chip mulch each year, which we receive from local arborists. This process helps us control weeds since we are not disturbing the soil with tillage.

Our produce is harvested with care and attention to detail. We are growing a variety of hearty greens, root vegetables, corn, and squash. You can find us at several farmers markets in Metro-Detroit including; Eastern Market (Keep Growing Detroit’s Grown in Detroit), Jefferson Chalmers, Birmingham, and St. Clair Shores.

FOOD WASTE DIVERSION:

We are proud to actively close the food loop within the City of Detroit by diverting food waste on a consistent basis. We divert food waste from local restaurants, events, and homes, while transforming it into a resource for growing food. Once the food waste reaches our farm it undergoes a rigorous process to ensure we are meeting safety standards and creating a quality product.

We are dedicated to compost production for our farm and are in the process of building capacity to sell compost to other farmers and gardeners. Stay tuned for our ability to accept more food waste to create compost.

HONORING THE LAND:

Sanctuary Farms rests upon the ancestral and contemporary lands of the Indigenous peoples of this region. This land has been home to the Ojibwa, Odawa, and Potawatomi nations, who have stewarded this land for countless generations. We honor their enduring connection to this territory and express our gratitude for their contributions to the land we now occupy.

We also acknowledge the ongoing presence and contributions of diverse Indigenous communities in the Detroit area and beyond. We recognize that their resilience, culture, and heritage continue to enrich our community.

Let us strive to be responsible stewards of this land and work towards acknowledging the past while forging a more inclusive and equitable future for all who call this place home.
